Hi everyone! I’m Keyaa, and I’m so excited to share the next chapter of our campaign, India Through The Eyes of an NRI Kid. Our latest adventure took Dad and me to a city I honestly didn’t know much about: Chandigarh.
Before we went, Dad kept saying, “Keyaa, this is going to be the most planned, most organized city you’ve ever seen.” And guess what? He was absolutely right!
More Than Just Sightseeing
When you’re an NRI kid visiting India, it’s not really a vacation—it’s a journey. You’re constantly comparing, learning, and trying to figure out where you fit in. In Chandigarh, that journey felt incredibly calm. Everything from the respectful traffic to the pristine parks was different from the hectic India I’ve seen in movies.
But it was more than just the cleanliness. It was about finding my connection to the roots I only hear about in stories.
The Storyteller in Stone: Rock Garden
We visited the famous Rock Garden, and that was a total game-changer for me. Before the trip, I thought it was just a tourist attraction, but learning the history of Nek Chand—the man who built the entire garden out of debris and waste—was incredible.
He built something beautiful, secretly, for years after the Partition. It struck me that my own family’s history is tied to that time, to those displaced feelings. Seeing that passion for art, for creation, emerge from something broken… it felt like a powerful lesson in Indian heritage. It was a reminder that creation and culture aren’t just found in textbooks; they’re found in the most unexpected places.

Finding Peace at Sukhna Lake
We ended our two days at Sukhna Lake, which they also call Peace Lake. I understood why right away. Walking along the waterfront, watching families and couples, and seeing the absolute lack of litter—it gave me a sense of ownership. This city, this lake, this organized way of life—it felt like a place I could belong to.
Dad and I talked about the importance of keeping our spaces clean and respecting the environment, and I realized that these small civic values are also part of connecting with my Indian roots. It’s not just about language or food; it’s about the underlying respect for community.
If you’re a family planning a trip, or an NRI teen trying to find your place, put Chandigarh on your list. It might surprise you, too. It’s a beautifully quiet chapter in my journey to discover India through the eyes of an NRI kid.
