I Thought I Knew India. Then I Actually Visited It

When Mom said we were going to India this year, I thought it would be like any other family trip — temples, relatives, food, photos, and then back home.
But it wasn’t. Not this time.

The moment we landed, India felt alive. Louder than I imagined — not just in sound, but in color, scent, and spirit. The air buzzed with something I couldn’t name. It was chaos and calm, all at once. I didn’t just see India. I felt it.

Every street corner had a story.
The chai seller on the platform calling out for his last cup of the night.
The aunties laughing on balconies, gossiping as if laughter was a language.
The fragrance of marigolds, the honking of rickshaws, the songs spilling out of tiny shops.
It was all noise — and somehow, all heart.

At first, I didn’t get it.
Why my parents missed this place so much.
Why they called it home, even though our home is thousands of miles away.

But somewhere between the mountain winds of Leh, the sunsets in Kutch, and the temple bells in Kerala — I understood.

India isn’t just a place you visit. It’s a place that visits you — and never leaves.
It clings to you in small ways: the smell of rain on mud, the sound of a conch shell, the warmth of your nani’s hands while serving you food you didn’t even know you missed.

This trip wasn’t just about me discovering India.
It was about Mom and Dad rediscovering it — through my eyes.
And together, we found something deeper than travel or tradition. We found connection.

So now, when someone asks where I’m from, I don’t just name a country.
I smile, and say, “It’s complicated. But it feels a lot like India.” 🇮🇳✨
