WHAT THE WHITE DESERT TAUGHT ME ABOUT STILLNESS
By Keyaa | India Through the Eyes of an NRI Kid
The Moment the Desert Made Me Quiet
Some places make you talk.
Some places make you think.
But the Rann of Kutch did something completely different — it made me quiet.
When we reached the White Desert before sunrise, everything looked unreal. The ground sparkled like crushed diamonds. The air was crisp. The sky was stretching awake. I’m usually bursting with questions and jokes, but that morning, I didn’t feel like saying anything at all.
The desert didn’t ask for noise.
It asked for stillness.
And that was the first lesson it gave me —
stillness isn’t empty. It’s peaceful. Sometimes it’s exactly what your mind needs.
Workshops That Made the Desert Come Alive
Right after that calm sunrise, we returned to Rann Utsav — and suddenly everything shifted.
I tried pottery, and my clay pot kept wobbling like it had a mind of its own.
I tried block-printing and somehow stamped patterns that looked perfectly imperfect.
And when the folk dancers started twirling, the whole desert seemed to come alive — swirling ghagras, bright colors, loud dhols, smiling faces everywhere.
It amazed me how the same place that felt silent in the morning could turn into a celebration by night.
That’s when I learned my second lesson —
life doesn’t have to stay in one mood. It can be calm and chaotic, quiet and colorful, all at once.
Seeing India Through My NRI Eyes
As an NRI kid, I’m always moving between two worlds.
One is predictable — school, routines, homework.
The other is India — warm, surprising, messy, magical.
Somewhere in the middle of the Rann, I realized something important:
you can belong to more than one world.
Your heart learns to hold both.
The stillness of the desert, the noise of the festival, the kindness of people everywhere — each moment felt like India was teaching me who I am.
The Lesson the White Desert Left With Me
Before leaving, I stepped onto the salt again and let the wind hit my face.
No music.
No noise.
Just me and the desert.
And suddenly, the biggest lesson made sense —
stillness isn’t the absence of life.
It’s where life slows down enough for you to actually feel it.
The Rann of Kutch didn’t just show me beauty.
It showed me how to pause.
And that’s a lesson I’ll carry forever.
